What is Buran?

Picture
Buran: (noun, verb, adjective) 1. A creation of experimental theatre works for a new audience (closely associated with the now) with respect to the actor's physical presence in relation to the spectator. 2. A blizzard (Russian).

Buran Theatre Company is an ensemble of disparate artists creating new works in a satellite system of communities. Buran is committed to making new performance works, collaborating with various mediums to create inclusive and highly theatrical productions to investigate new narrative structures that involve the audience before and after the performance. Buran's distinctive style situates high and low culture, juicing them to a fine pulp, integrating mythology, live music, playful mayhem, autobiography, and a docket of reoccurring characters with a folksiness that invokes porch swing performance and jam sessions, instigating a theatre that extends its reach before and after the event of performance. Buran is committed to the vision of its resident artists, allowing them to explore their own personal obsessions with each company-collaborated production

Our work is rarely subtle and always polarizing.

Buran Theatre was co-founded in 2007 by Adam Burnett & Alicia Gian at the University of Kansas as a platform to create experimental theatre work without charging the community admission. Since leaving the University in 2008, the company has had an international approach to producing new works. Co-founder Gian established her professional theatre career in Vilnius, Lithuania as the Artistic Director of Vilniaus Kamerinis Teatras, where Buran’s original concert comedy Meile be Akcento is entering its third year of performances. Co-founder Burnett has managed the US operations by living and producing in a variety of outposts to establish company relations, thus creating a satellite system of company members. Buran has produced original performance works in Albuquerque (The Cotton Plantation, The Suicide Song), Los Angeles (American Mythology, Vol. 1), Lawrence (Nightmares, A Greater Release) and Kansas City (Money Buckets!, The House of Fitzcarraldo), and workshop productions in NYC (Napoleon Exiled, Bournijka the Boxer, A Chronicle of Wasted Time).

Now in its fifth year of producing Buran has premiered twelve original productions.
